60 Credit Performing Arts Homework (September 2018 - July 2019)

10/09/18                   Induction Project 2018

Task 1:

I found the youtube videos very intriguing to watch because they all explored a new way that theatre can be created and that no matter what space it is performed in it can still be as immersive as watching a film on tv or at the cinema. What also made it enjoyable to watch was the way the actors would communicate with each other in such a realistic way you would almost mistake them for being the actual characters. Usually, lines would be said perfectly and in great accuracy and detail but if an actor messes up his/her line the actors would either re-say the line or other actors would help them by saying a new line so that they may move on or improvise.

Now, Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent at any acting job he takes on and nothing less can be said about this part of the play that I had watched. He speaks to his co-actor in such a way that it really draws you into what is actually going on. He ends up talking to his co-actor about being dead in a box (coffin) and you end up feeling the same emotions as his (Benedicts) character as he goes on being quite confused with the idea of being alive but dead in the box (coffin). What I noticed while watching this is the way they both stayed in character and never broke out once, that being said though they both portrayed the characters emotions in such a way that you couldn't help but feel sorry for the characters and what must be going through their heads.

Now I must admit the play had confused me when I had first started to watch it. But as I began to get an idea of what was going on I became more enthused with the physical and dramatical parts of this piece. The theme of the opera was such an amazing touch as it drew me in as a viewer even more as it was such a spectacle to view. The two actors who were portraying a horrific image (an image of some sort of death happening as it looked like guts were hanging out of their stomachs) at one point of the play which introduced some sort of an issue go on quite vividly. What made it better was the stage they used, it looked like it was turning all sorts of directions and the panels they used to unveil the death scene. The one thing that intrigued me lots though was the man that stood in the darkened circle at the beginning and was seen walking through all the scenes till it was his turn to sing. Just everything that that actor did to portray that character just seemed creepy but really cool at the same time.
Now having watched this play, I think that the way the actors were able to portray themselves as if they were really the characters still amazes me up to today. They all acted beautifully and synced with each other well especially between The Inspector and Mr Birling. The chemistry between these two characters in a whole was one of friction and power over one another mainly coming from the actor portraying Mr Birling. Now the actor that played Eric was also very good at playing the drunkard son (who Shelia earlier had called squiffy) but I do think on some occasions he didn't portray the character as he was intended to be in certain situations, but again i cannot go on without saying that it was an amazing performance the young actor had pulled off for such a difficult and mind boggling character such as Eric. I must be forward and admit this though that some of the actor's dialects were a bit off while others were on the point which I didn't think was a problem but could have been quite off-putting for others watching there. I must also commend them on the fact that even though there was quite some noise through some bits they managed to push through and just avoid the noise.

Now this piece to me was very confusing and I struggled to understand the theme of this play but despite that, I loved the way they always kept you on your toes as the acts switched and a new story that connected the rest together began. The actors stayed in full concentration mode even when the humor they used was quite crude. The actors never spoke while switching scenes as to not draw the attention of the audience away from the things that are going on. I also like the fact the stage was simple but well designed and the clothing they used was easy to take on and off making it easier to switch to a different scene. At the beginning of the play, one of the actors is talking to god and she sits along with the audience while doing this helping them feel more included and personal making them think that they are the ones going through this as well.

19/10/18      Unit 11: Theatre for Children Presentation

In this Unit we had to create presentations about the topic we are studying at the precise moment, which in this case would be theatre for children. The presentations should last at least 5 minutes and be factual and knowledgeable on all levels including fairy tales and such.
