60 Credit Performing Art Assesments (September 2018 - July 2019)
17/09/18 Unit 7: Performing to Children: Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 17th of September 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Wednesday the 19th of September, Starting at 2 o'clock and finishing at 4:15pm. This Practice was done under the supervision of Teachers/Members of staff.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 1
- I will practice increasing my breath control, After which I will test this by being able to read my lines without running out of breath. I will also start to be able to make my breathing more manageable while reading from certain scripts (Peter Pan). I did a 5-10 minutes worth of warm-ups and then a 3 minute cool down session.
How The Practice Went
- We First began by breathing in for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds and then breathing out for as long as you could. We did this exercise around 4-5 times; each time doing it using a different vocal technique (So instead of just breathing out normally we would breathe out using different noises like letter s's) After doing this we would either play a game of splat as such as way for us to all start bonding with each other more. The cooldown we had was really calm and soothing. we all lied on the floor and closed our eyes, while doing this we made our limbs go loose and then relaxed and stayed lying on the floor until we were told that we can get back up and start the lesson.
Reflection
- For my first week of this Vocal Development Programme, I think I did really well with the practicing part and I must admit I am really proud of how well my Breathing Skills have improved even though I do tend to get the odd lapse of breath sometimes, so I think I may have to go back and improve it much more. I also think I should start doing more independent vocal exercises so that I am able to see much more of a benefit in the development of my voice and so that I can find more techniques to try to do. Overall I think I have done very well for my first week and I hope to continue to improve my Vocal Development next week as well.
For Next Time...
- I need to continue to practice on my breath control.
- Do some Independent Exercises as well as in the lesson.
24/09/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 24th of September 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Monday the 24th of September, Starting at 5:30am and finishing at 6:00am. This Practice was done under the supervision of My Mother.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 2
- I will begin to practice my Breath Capacity, After which I will be able to read an extract from the Christmas Carol. Again I will start to be able to make my breathing more manageable while reading from certain extracts. I did a 5-10 minutes worth of warm-ups and then a 3 minute cool down session.
How The Practice Went
- For the exercises this week I wanted to do something a little different that of which included lip trill (pronounce (a consonant) by rapid vibration of the tongue against the hard or soft palate or the uvula), Which I did for 2 minutes, tongue trill which I did for 2 minutes again, humming; I did this for a minute and a half. (make a low, steady continuous sound like that of a bee.) While doing this I noticed that my mouth began to get very numb, but at the same time when I first began to practice reading the monologue from a writer called Eli J. The monologue was called DNA and is about a student who offers an explanation to why she is falling asleep in class. While doing this exercise I noticed that I was able to pronounce certain words and letters much better and not only that but I was also able to control my breathing much more as I am now able to talk until certain stops are provided and at a more consistent rate.
Reflection
- I think that by doing the exercises I have been doing, I have been able to control my breathing capacity as increased tremendously then from last time. where I would struggle with it. I think that I should vary my exercises then sticking with the same ones over and over again, but an exercise where I am able to develop another aspect of my vocal development.
For Next Time...
- Try to start finding out how I can vocally develop for my character (Pirate 3) before I receive my script.
- To do another aspect of vocal development that will improve my voice even more.
01/10/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 1st of October 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Wednesday the 3rd of October, Starting at 7 o'clock and finishing at 7:30pm.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
- My Smart Goals For Week 3
- Try to vary the exercises I do this week instead of doing repeats of the same exercises I shall also carry on with the development of my character (Pirate 3) so that I am fully prepared for when I receive my script. Also, try to review what exercises I did the 2 weeks prior and go through them this week (if I get the time).
How The Practice Went
- I began to get a bit bored of the plain vocal exercises I was doing so I began to search for new ways in which I could improve my vocal abilities. This search mainly leads me across to many singing vocal exercises, which at first I thought were useless but then as I began to try them out I figured that this is a very helpful way of exercising them indeed. The first one I found was the Two-octave pitch glides (which is what I ended up realizing I did at college as part of an exercise) I did this for at least 4 minutes via a video on youtube. I did first down only at first to help prepare myself, then up and down on high vowels and lastly, I did it all together over the top of a song that I found on youtube that I remember doing in a lesson. This week we also received the scripts for our first production/pantomime, Peter Pan which we all did a table read through on Wednesday's lesson.
Reflection
- I really liked the change of exercises that I decided to do this week as it was something fresh and not a repetition of the weeks before. I need to find a time where I can go over the exercises I do weeks prior so that I can still improve other aspects of my vocal development at the same time.
For Next Time...
- Try to work on vocal projection and ways I can heighten the level of my voice while Performing.
- Ways I can remember lines from a script.
08/10/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 8th of October 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Sunday the 14th of October, Starting at 10 o'clock and finishing at 10:30am.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 4
- Get to all rehearsal schedules on time and ready and prepared to begin going over scenes. Once again work on character development to help improve upon my characters overall "vocal appearance". Also Once again try to go over exercises that I may have not gone over to help keep them fresh in my mind and to also help me continuously remember to do it.
How The Practice Went
- This week's exercises slightly resembles week 2s exercises and these exercises are: forward tongue roll which I did for about a minute and a half but then I decided to do a forward tongue extension which I did for around 30 seconds as it began to hurt me a lot at the base of that weird string thing under the tongue. The next one I did was again the tongue trill which I did for at least 5 mins. Today I also decided to do a cool down to see if it would help my voice a bit more. The cooldown I did was me breathing in and out through my diaphragm calmly and through my nose and out through my mouth. I did this for about 4 minutes. This week there was another Rehearsal (Wednesday the 9th of October) and the same on Saturday the 13th of October. For these 2 Rehearsals, We practiced scene 1 and 2 blocking and did an open day for year 11s.
Reflection
- My Reflection for this week is a bit different to usual as I feel like I am beginning to slip a lot in lessons and by that, I mean not paying enough attention which I need to start doing to progress further into this subject. I need to also Work a lot more with Projection and the articulation of my voice to help further push my characters "vocal dynamics". I have finally remembered to go over past exercises, which I must admit helped out a lot while I did them, it helped to show me that I have in fact progressed from when I first started this vocal development programme.
For Next Time...
- Keep improving on certain areas (in prior weeks) that I have noticed need a lot more attention on.
- Keep developing the characteristics of my characters for the pantomime (Peter Pan).
15/10/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 15th of October 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Saturday the 20th of September, Starting at 2 o'clock and finishing at 2:30pm.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 5
- This week I am going to try to do a much calmer exercise as I am not feeling very well. This will involve more Physical activities Including neck rolls etc. Remember to do Recap of past vocal developments and again try to remember lines from the script (my lines). Also starting to get parts of my costume ready for the performance.
How The Practice Went
- So for this week, I decided to do a more cooled down exercise as I was ill and had a terrible sore throat. So all I did was find a comfortable but flat place to lie down, then I started by making a low humming sound and I began to also practice panting. Then I rolled my body over to one side to get up as to keep my breathing rhythm intact. I Repeated this by rolling over to the opposite side. Also, I did some neck rolls, I did this by rotating my head very slowly clockwise and anti-clockwise which helped relaxed my neck muscles. I also did do some shoulder rolls by rotating them forward and backward, by doing this it helped warm up my neck and throat muscles. This week again I had to go to another set of Rehearsals on Wednesday the 17th of October. In this rehearsal, we all did scene 3 blocking and scene 4 blocking.
Reflection
- I think I much prefer this type of exercise as it is nice and calming after doing the hardcore vocal developments and I did begin to feel much better after doing these exercises. I am very happy that I was able to recap over the exercises I had done the weeks prior. I think I am once again improving tremendously on the development of my voice, including phonation and articulation of my voice to better suit my character and the way I shall depict her.
For Next Time...
- I shall work on facial muscles and circulation of blood that I need to help do this exercise.
- I shall also go over needed scenes that I need to improve upon to enhance the perspective that the audience will receive when reviewing my character (while watching the performance).
22/10/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 22nd of October 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Tuesday the 23rd of October, Starting at 6 o'clock and finishing at 6:30pm.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 6
- My goal for this week is to improve the circulation of blood around my body and exercising my facial muscles to help improve my vocal development. I shall also try to do a read through without my script so that I can improve on the scenes I am still falling short on. I will also once again do a review over prior weeks exercises.
How The Practice Went
- So as I still wasn't well this week I decided to continue with the same exercises from last week. I began to massage my whole entire face by doing slow circles with the tip of my fingers to relax the muscles in my face. Also, I started jumping up and down whilst doing this I began to shake my hands and feet to help to improve the circulation and loosening of my muscles in my body. I decided to do a new technique I found out on the internet, its called The Lion/Mouse technique that required me to stand in front of one of my mirrors at home and stretch all my facial muscles as much as I could. The first part to this was for me to stretch my mouth wide open, imitating the roar of a lion and a snarl. After that, I began to switch to the face of a mouse immediately, by scrunching up my facial muscles and looking small and meek. As I was doing this I noticed that as I was Switching between the lion and mouse face it began to help the blood circulation in my face. I also pulled out my tongue as far as I could, trying to reach my chin by pulling the tip of it down or on the tip of your nose by stretching it up.
Reflection
- This week's exercises were really relaxed and calm as I only really worked on one specific thing which was circulation and improvement of facial muscles. I think personally my script work needs to improve a lot more if I am going to pull my first production off as I am still struggling to remember lines. But overall I think this week was a huge success.
For Next Time...
- Work on the articulation of voice once more as it seems to be slipping a bit.
- Improvements on script work.
29/10/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 29th of October 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. We are also working on a piece called The Jungle which we will be performing on the 14th of November 2018, Both of these events will be within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Wednesday the 31st of October, Starting at 2 o'clock and finishing at 5:30pm. This Practice was done under the supervision of Teachers/Members of staff.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 7
- I will practice increasing my breath limit, After which I will test this by being able to read my lines without running out of breath or using one breath. Once again I will also start to be able to make my breathing more manageable while reading from certain scripts (Peter Pan).
How The Practice Went
- This week I thought that I would do some tongue twisters as an exercise and it turned out pretty well in my opinion. I had to be sure that I said these within the one breath limit. but saying that I never went faster than I was able to go and still kept the clarity of every single word in the phrase:
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
A tutor who tooted the flute,
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to the tutor,
"Is it easier to toot,
Or to tutor two tooters to toot?"
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to the tutor,
"Is it easier to toot,
Or to tutor two tooters to toot?"
Bobby Bibbit bought a bat.
Bobby Bibbit bought a ball.
With the bat, Bob banged the ball,
Banged the ball against the wall.
Amidst the mists and fiercest frosts,
With barest wrists and stoutest boasts,
He thrusts his fists against the post,
And still insists he sees the ghosts.
Reflection
- This was extremely fun and I really enjoyed doing these tongue twisters as it helped me realize what words I stumble upon a lot more than others. I was also able to (after doing the tongue twisters) I was able to also try and do the tongue twisters in different tones of voice and clarity which made it a very exciting experience and I would love to do it again but at different speeds and even maybe different types of voices as that would make it more interesting.
For Next Time...
- I need to continue to practice the lines in my script.
- Work on breathing capacity once again as it seems to be slipping a bit.
- try to review everything done over the past 7 weeks.
26/11/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 26th of November 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. This event will be performed within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Wednesday the 26th of November, Starting at 2 o'clock and finishing at 5:30pm. This Practice was done under the supervision of Teachers/Members of staff.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 8
- As it is getting closer to the peter pan performance my main goal for this week is to finish learning all the stage directions and lines I need to learn for the actual performance. I will also focus on my Articulation this week as I need to start to improve it again.
How The Practice Went
- This week I decided to do an Articulation exercise by the name of: About Socks. This will force you to: Open your mouth as wide as you can, Make sure you articulate your voice and speak really clearly. When I first did it was really tricky, but after I did it for around 7 days I got really good at it.
About Socks
Give me the gift of a grip-top sock, A clip drape shipshape tip-top sock. Not your spin slick slapstick slipshod stock, But a plastic, elastic grip-top sock. None of your fantastic slack swap slop From slapdash flash cash haberdashes shop. Not a knick-knack knock knock-kneed knickerbocker sock with a mock-shot blob-mottled trick-ticker top clock. Not a super sweet seersucker rucksack sock, Not a spot-speckled frog-freckled cheap sheik’s socks off a hodge-podge moss-blotched scotch-botched block. Nothing slipshod drip drop flip-flop or glip glopTip me to a tip-top grip top sock. - Dr. Seuss
Reflection
- Once again I really enjoyed doing this exercise as it was really a fun experience to have to go through and I would suggest this to any other student as I really enjoyed it. I also had a chance to go over the 7 weeks of Vocal Development I have been doing and overall I am very proud of the progress I have made as I thought I was going to do really bad but I have done the opposite and done better than ever.
For Next Time...
- I'm going to work on Articulation finding new exercises as I go along.
- Again continue to practice my script as that needs improvement.
03/12/18 Vocal Development Programme Workbook
Week Beginning: Monday the 3rd of December 2018
- The Pending Performances are Peter Pan which will be performed the week of the 10th of December 2018, Dates and times are to be advised. This event will be performed within the college.
- The Dates and Times of these Practices were Wednesday the 5th of November, Starting at 2 o'clock and finishing at 5:30pm. This Practice was done under the supervision of Teachers/Members of staff.
- The planned length of this practice is dependent on what type of exercise we are planning to do but as a safe bet, I would say the exercise was around 5-10 minutes.
My Smart Goals For Week 9
- As I am now a week away from The Peter Pan performance. I am going to be focusing more on issues that have surfaced during rehearsals but I shall still do Articulation work as well.
How The Practice Went
- For this Articulation exercise, I began to draw circles in each of my cheeks (at different times) with the tip of my tongue. I tried to make the circles as perfect as possible (but I must admit I failed quite a lot). Once I had completed 20 in one direction (left) I began to draw 20 more circles in the opposite direction. I did do the same for the other cheek. I also varied the number of circles in each cheek, however, I tried to match the amount on each side.
Reflection
- This exercise did annoy me quite a bit as my tongue and mouth began to hurt me like crazy due to me piercing my tongue really hard against the inside of my cheek. Overall this week has been a very stressful week due to rehearsal schedules meaning that I wasn't able to find enough time to do exercises but I tried my best and did one.
For Next Time...
- I'm going to nail the performance with as much effort as I have!
- Again continue to practice my script as that needs improvement.
Final Conclusion
This past couple of weeks have been a very hectic experience with the vocal development challenges but I have managed to pull through it and I must admit that it has been a very interesting couple of weeks but even though it has been long and tiring at times it has been a very enjoyable and rewarding thing to do as throughout this process I have noticed a huge difference in the quality of my voice and the way I portray certain words.

3.Character Development
CHARACTER PROFILE QUESTIONS
1. What is your full name?
- Elisabeth Ebba Piorr Clarke
1. What does your name mean? Origin?
- All 3 elements of my name (First name, Middle Name, and Surname) Contribute to my Characters Overall Personality/ Persona. The name “Elisabeth” Originates from the Hebrew tongue meaning “The Oath or fullness of god”. The name “Ebba” means “Strength of a boar” and it derives from the German masculine name “Eberhard”. “Piorr” on the other hand means “Bitterness” and “Sorrow” and once again originates from a Hebrew background. Lastly, the surname “Clarke” means “clerk” and derives from the Latin word “Clercius”.
1. When & where were you born? Current age?
- I was born on the 27th of December 1813 in the quiet region of St Phillips, Barbados. I am currently 25 years of age, but I am due to turn 26 in a couple of months.
1. What is your astrological sign? Explain.
- My astrological sign is that of a Capricorn. That means that I am willing to do all the hard work that there is to do, even though I have tendencies to be quite lazy and reluctant at times. I am also a very ambitious person and determined to do whatever I need to do to get to where I am heading ( when I am not being lazy or drunk).
1. What is your occupation?
- I am a full-time Pirate, under the command of the feared Pirate Captain James Hook. But I must admit I don’t really enjoy it as he doesn’t treat us that well and I am quite scared of him if I’m going to be truthful.
1. Who is your greatest role model?
- My greatest Role Model is Sojourner Truth. The reason she is one of the greatest women (in my opinion) to live is that she fought for the US abolitionist movement. Helping pave the way for future generations of children from a colored descent. No matter what she went through she always stood up for what is right and never let anybody stop her and that is why I look up to her so much in daily life and in a way try to live by her morals (even though I do struggle at times to stick to that point).
1. What excites you?
- What really excites me is having new adventures to go on and exploring new places I have never been to before, what also excites me is the fact that I get to do a somewhat exciting job at times but as the saying goes “That is a pirate’s life for me” so most things I do excite me quite a lot.
1. What secrets do you have?
- To be truthful, if it’s a secret then why would I tell you?
1. What are your deepest fears?
- My deepest fear is being alone (Physically and mentally) and never achieving the goals I want to achieve in life which also links to another fear which is disappointing the ones I love most (which I do most of the time) but at times I think the fear I have helps me be the person I am today.
1.
- I must admit I’ve always had a hatred for Captain Hook as he treats us all horribly and doesn’t respect us for who we are at all but to be quite frank he does bring along quite the adventure so I must love him for that but overall, I love the Mermaids and the lost boys as they have a very kind and childlike manner which I admire. I adore Peter Pan and Tinkerbell as they can fly around all day and go on many new adventures and go meet new people which is what I would really love to do.
1. 11.List 10 adjectives to describe you.
- Ambitious
- Fierce
- Jealous
- Adaptable
- Adventurous
- Frank
- Gregarious
- Unassuming
- Witty
- Resourceful
1.
- My hobbies include dressmaking and playing instruments. I love dress making as it is a way for me to express my creative side and make costumes/ repairs to them it also gives me a sense of clarity and peace at times. I love to play instruments especially the “Steel Pans”, the music that this instrument can produce is really beautiful and there is no better sound than this to me anyways as it helps to remind me of my origins.
1. 13.What food best describes you?
- Cou Cou as it can both be savoury and sweet. Possibly a Shirley’s biscuit as well but it depends really on how certain people see me. But just as any other dish you either love it or hate it.
1.
- That I am weak when it comes to the liquor that I drink. Plus I am probably a lightweight but am never fully able to test that as I can’t remember anything from the night before.
1. What animal would best describe you? Why?
- A goat as I can be a bit of a head-butt at times (just as goats would head-butt others) but that being said I can also be quite nice and a very hard working individual and I like to travel with my friends and be loud (screaming just like a goat).
1. 15. What is your favorite: color? Animal? Food? Book? Movie? Music?
- Favorite animal: Is a goat.
- Favorite Food: Shirley’s Biscuits
- Favorite Book: Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
- Favorite Movie: Hidden Figures
- Favorite Music: Doctor Strange Soundtrack.
ANYTHING ELSE..........
PREVIOUS ACTION
This is specific information from the script, which details the events and activities which occurred prior to the play beginning. Note specifically YOUR CHARACTER’S previous action. It is not necessary to know others’ previous action.
DRAMATIC ACTION
1. What do others say about this character?
- Other Pirates would say that my character is a very headstrong character in some aspects, but the majority of the time my character can be seen as drunk but fierce when it comes towards her wanting something. The Fairies, Mermaids, John, Michael, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Peter pan would all see me as a menace only there to cause destruction and a whole manner of chaos under the will of captain hook.
1. What does this character say about others?
- In my opinion, I don’t think that she hates the other characters at all but she has to in a way assume that she does as to not upset captain hook (and his hatred for them). But overall I think she likes all the other characters and in a way wishes to be like them and do the things that they can do.
1. What discoveries does this character make?
- The discovery my character made was the fact that she is a very headstrong woman who knows what she wants and what she has to do to get to where she wants to get, as she is determined to achieve great things.
1. How does this information affect each character? Does it change their behavior, way of thinking, needs?
- Yes, it does begin to change the way the other characters behavior and way of thinking towards my character begins to change. This is because they will begin to perceive my character as someone who is very courageous and hard working towards her goal, who always tries her best and never give up. Making them, in my opinion, trust her more.
1. Does this information signal a victory? A defeat? A reason for re-evaluation?
- This information signals a victory for my character because she is breaking through stereotypes that pirates were placed in (they could never be kind or nice or good) and becoming her own free willed Pirate/Women.
1. Character’s objective, obstacle, and tactic
- My characters main objective is to break free from Captain Hooks grasp and do what she wants to do in life. The obstacle she has to get through to do this is once again Captain Hook and Smee (sometimes).
7. What is the character’s subtext?
My characters underlying emotion is that she is always angry but tries to not show it as to not cause any mass attention to herself and bother her other fellow pirates.
8. Character-mood-intensity upon entering the action (this is the physical or body-state of the character)
* Heartbeat: During the battle, my characters heart rate increases tremendously as she begins to attack her enemy.
* perspiration: She doesn't perspire that much unless she is under pressure then it does seem to get worse.
* Stomach condition: I'm not sure about this question unless it is talking about if you have a good or bad stomach, I'd say she has a good one.
* muscle tension: Her muscle tension is pretty good except around her knee caps and upper leg where it struggles a bit as she has problems with her knees.
* breathing: Her breathing rate is very good in terms of when she's not fighting to when she is.
CHARACTERISATION
INTERNALS
1. Background (culture, childhood, upbringing, special memories)
- “Cutlass Liz” was brought up in a Bajan culture (Barbados) by her two parents who were both very highly respected people in the Province of St Phillips. Her father worked with the Constitutional Monarchy (Parliament but works via the queen) and often traveled a lot to the United Kingdom. Her mother, on the other hand, was the daughter of the governor of Barbados Sir James Frederick Lyon, meaning that while my father was away my mother was at home mainly with her helping her study and such. She had a very generous childhood, lots of friends and bountiful amounts of riches under her name. But what she longed for most was the sense of adventure and to see her father the next time he would come home. Her upbringing was a very luscious one until about the age of 12. Her father was caught in London and auctioned off in a slave market in America where he sadly died after trying to escape home to his family. Not even his stature could save him. When word had reached home to her mother and her about what had happened a spread of shear panic came across the Province of Barbados. Soon she and her mother were separated and sent to different sugar plantation fields, never hearing from each other both presumed each other to be dead. “Cutlass Liz” managed to escape, via one of the ships she was on (as she was being transferred) being hit by another ship leading to her capture by Captain Hook and her becoming a Pirate. This also led her to start drinking and in terms altered her personality due to the issues she went through. The one special memory she does have of her parents is them all going to the “Crop Over” festival and enjoying the music and food and embracement her and her parents would share together during them times as they are the only times her father would not be away.
1. Mental (intellect/common sense, right/left brain…)
- She is a very bright character (due to her upbringing) and knows a lot about the arts and other such things, but tends to hide it due to the fact she is a pirate and tries her best to act like them. She is mainly a right sided (brain) sort of person but can sway sometimes.
1. Spiritual (religion, beliefs, and values)
- My character was a Jehovah’s Witness by choice of parents but as she grew up she changed to a more of a Christian approach. Her beliefs and values are roughly the same in the sense that she believes in free will and the power to be who you want to be no matter what. She also is a strong believer in Equality via Gender and race and the power to be able to do whatever (if morally right) you wish to do.
1. Emotional (calm, angry, gentle... when and why)
- Her emotions do tend to vary depending on if she is drinking or not or if she is just in any old mood. But she is mostly scared at times, not to forget that she can also be quite bold but to an extent, otherwise she is mainly a calm and angry (at times) person.
EXTERNALS
1. Dress (casual/formal, day/night…)
- Her dress sense has changed quite a lot since she was a child. She has become in ways scruffier looking than before. But it’s a relaxed sort of scruffy look.
1. Movement (bounce, sway, swagger …)
- Her movements can be quite relaxed unless she is about to jump into battle, then and only then will her movements become more vigorous and action-packed.
3. Posture (slouched, straight, leads with head/hips/chest….)
- She has quite a slouched posture at times but she does tend to switch from slouched to upright once again leading with her hips instead of the head like most of the other characters.
1. Voice (pitch, rate, volume, inflection, quality)
- The pitch of her voice would vary depending on the sentence or word she would say which would also change the rate at which she would push out certain lines. Her Inflection of words was really good as well unless on the odd occasion she would stumble on a said word and change the way it sounds. Overall the quality of her voice is really good to the point that she could draw you into what she’s saying.
1. Mannerisms (habits the character does without a prop)
- Mimicking other characters when they are talking, especially Captain Hook.
OBJECTIVE (Desire or Victory)
This is a statement of what a character wants most; power, dominance over others, love for another, self-integrity, dominance over fear, etc.
Answer these questions:
What do I really want? Why? When do I want it? Why?
- All she wants in life is the chance to love another once again and put dominance over fear. This is because she hates being scared all the time and alone and after losing her parents she just wants to regain all the good stuff she had once before and be able to be loved again and never be afraid. She would love this to happen quite soon as she is tired of being scared of Captain Hook and she wants to go on her own adventures as well.
OBSTACLE (Other)
This is the person or thing that is preventing them from getting what they want. What or who is standing in their way? From whom (in the play) do they want it? Who in the play can help them? Who in the play can hurt them?
Answer these questions:
From whom (in the play) do I want it? Why? Who in the play can help me? Why?
- She would like help from Peter Pan and all the other Mythical creatures there because she no longer wishes to be hated by the creatures of never land and just wants there help to set her free from Captain Hooks ghastly grasp.
Who in the play can hurt me? Why? What are my deepest fears? Why?
- Captain Hook can hurt her by throwing her off board the ship or by hitting her with his Hook. But her deepest fear is being left alone stranded somewhere she does not know with no human contact.
TACTIC (Will)
This is a character’s relative strength in attaining their wants or desires. How can they get what they want? How (and whom) can they threaten? How strong or weak is their inner strength? Is it strong enough to push them to the full limit, or will they compromise? Do they have any sense of moral responsibility to others? How honest are they with others and with themselves?
(A character’s moral stance will affect the attainment of their wants and desires)
Answer these questions:
How can I get it? Why? How (and whom) can I threaten? Why? How (and whom) can I induce? Why?
- She is very head strong and strong at heart so she would be able to overpower Captain Hook if she had the chance so that she would be able to leave the Pirate crew. She could threaten to throw Captain Hook to the Crocodile to try and get him to listen to her. Being honest with herself she would do whatever need be to get her way.
EXPECTATION (Resolution)
Every character has 5 basic Human Needs. These, in one way or another, ultimately become what the character expects to get. What does the character expect in the end? Why do they expect to get it? Why does it excite them? What will they do when they get it?
1) Winning 2) Survival 3) Validation 4)Love 5) Happiness
Answer these questions:
Why do I expect to get it? Why does it excite me? What will I do when I get it?
- She expects to get it as it will be the last piece of the puzzle, the final battle to end all battles this will be her chance to fix her life and try and mend things to the best of the ability that has happened to her in the past. It excites her because she will be able to do anything she wants to do afterward without the restrictions she had when under the rule of Captain Hook.
4.Annotated script
Include personal notes on character as well as blocking, set changes, and costume changes, etc.
5.Pictures/sketches of your costume and make-up ideas
6.Rehearsal Log
Log entries should use complete sentences. Every entry should start with the date. A standard length should be between 200 and 300 words.
The purpose of log entries is to show that you understand and are able to comment thoughtfully on a specific experience. You should aim to demonstrate skill and development. To say I don’t know, I don’t understand, or I have no answer is inappropriate, unless there is follow up an explanation for the confusion. There is always an answer when it comes to personal reflection because there is always a personal point of view.
When writing your entries, always think of the WHAT, WHY and HOW of each situation
Remember to also list your individual warm-up routines and exercises to develop particular skills
Some questions you could answer are:
•What scene did you do?/ How did you approach it?
•What was the director’s response?/ How would you evaluate your work?
•What can you change for next time?
•What was the outcome of the rehearsal?/ How can you improve?
•What did you learn? / How will this apply to future rehearsals?
•What did you dislike about the rehearsal?/ How can you improve the experience for yourself?
•What was it like to work with your cast?/ How well do you work with other people?
•How is the scene progressing?
•How is the group working together?
•Is there one leader, or does everyone participate?
•What has changed since the last rehearsal?
•Did you stay in character throughout the rehearsal?
•Did you project your voice enough?
Note down a list of skills you already have and what you need to work on. How will you develop these skills?
7.Notes from the director and choreographer
After each rehearsal, the director and choreographer will give notes to the cast – make sure you write down all notes specific to your performance.
28th of November 2018
Scene 1: Peter Pan theme song opens up the performance, then the crocodile scene commences. Music begins after the crocodile has finished talking and then the set change begins, just before the scene begins. For scene 1 prop being brought on are the rocking chair and a prop box (full of toys). Mrs. Darling has her song (needed to sing much louder). Before Peter Pans song comes on, entering him into the scene. Props need to be brought off before Scene 2 commences (Set change need to be done under the time limit of about 10-20 seconds. Scene 1 ends.
Scene 2: Blackout and Pirate music opens up Scene 2. As the Pirates enter the enter really aggressively as they are drunk. Smee then tries to get the pirates up until the music changes (Hooks theme) Then the scene evolves fro there. Lines were delivered lovely and with confidence, But emotions need to keep straight and not laughing on stage (like when Hook enters the stage). I have to get punched in the face by Peter Pan and fall on the floor (make it look believable).
Scene 3: Music again opens up scene 3 after the blackout. The scene begins with the lost children talking. Peter pan then enters with his theme song. ( Tree trunks brought on the beginning of scene 3).Wendy will then sing her song at the end of scene 3.
Scene 4: Back was to the audience whilst the first line was delivered. Stopped quite a lot after a while (with certain lines) Must be confident with our knowledge. Ensure face is constantly in character because on occasion it did slip.
Scene 5: Starts with Introductory music for the fairies. Improvisation of beginning with the fairies. Fairies dance at the end with the song single ladies by Beyoncé. Blackout then happens props are taken off and replaced with rum boxes for scene 6.
Scene 6: Starts off with Pirate theme Scene continues from there on.
Scene 7: Keep more of a straight face when in serious situations and do not break character.
Overall: Practice the projection of our voices and the drunk ness at the beginning for my character. Also, work on “it’s going down” and “Don’t stop believing”. Also, work on characterization in scene 2.
7th of December 2018
Loads of noise in certain scenes, need to keep the noise down as the audience can’t hear lines being said.
Fix scene prop changes, be quick and quite( set change should be 10 seconds or less.
Pirate dance: the best dance out of all them, the only issue is with the spacing of the pirates!!
Nursery scene 9: Took too long to set up, once again needs to be 10 seconds or less and needs to be very quiet as to not draw the audiences attention away from the pantomime.
Sets need to be marked up!!
Scene 1: Blocks are not meant to be played with as they are double sided and will reveal sets for other scenes if turned. (Same with scene 2). The cast need to speak up in the nursery scenes once again lines cannot be heard.
Scene 2: More energy is needed from the pirates.
(When leaving stage still act as your given characters).
After the Peter Pan performance (16th of December 2018):
Good Areas:
Our communication with each other was really good.
We stuck together and managed to you'll through this whole process.
We played up to our characters and the energy showed through that.
Lines were delivered well.
Improvisation of scenes was really good as well.
Costumes and makeup were amazing for Peter Pan.
The support and empowerment were amazing to each other.
Bad Areas:
The professionalism of our rehearsal needs more improvement as we went off track too much.
We need to listen to each other a lot more than we do now.
Projection is needed a lot more in future projects.
We need to work on not getting rude to each other during rehearsals even if the stress and tensions get high.
Following orders and not making unauthorized adaptations.
No talking whilst on stage and backstage.
Do not laugh whilst on stage and try not to lose focus.
Quicker set changes are needed.
People need to accept constructive criticism given to them.
Commitment is needed for rehearsals as turn-ups weren't good this year.
We need to stop getting too frustrated with each other.
We need to become more aware of our roles.
We need to be more dedicated to our roles.
We need to be more of a family and a team and leave all dramas at the door.
8.Final Evaluation
1. Analyze 4 moments in the rehearsal process when you felt that you were making progress in developing your piece? This should be related to the script, character development, skills development, etc. Ideally, the 4 moments should occur at different times over the rehearsal period.
During scene 2 I'm always struggled to catch another cast member (Frankie) and I always seemed to stand in the way of the view if the audience. But with the great direction of my drama teacher I was able to not be in the view of the audience and catch my cast member in time instead if dropping her (which I didn't do at any time). Scene 4 my one fault was that I kept in running out of the wrong door during the end of the scene and dropping out of character quite A lot too, but to fix these issues I would stand next to a pirate I would start with in every scene and follow them out of the correct stage door. I learned that how id stays in character is by letting some of my personality drop out into the character that way I would not lose/ drop my character. The next scene I had improved in was Scene 8. It would always be with the dance and fight scene that led to the end of the scene. I improved the dance a lot by taking a whole load of time to practice it at home and at college which helped me improve massively even though at times I know I personally messed up. The fight scene also improved a lot. As I and one of the other cast members would always forget the order of our fight scene meaning that it looked jumbled up but we improved it by using smooth transitions into next parts of the dance.
2. What would you say were the least two useful exercises from the rehearsal process? Explain your statement. Suggest some alternatives.
In my honest opinion, I don't think any of the exercises were useless as all the exercises we did help us to calm down in a way and help provide us with the necessary lessons of vocal development and dance developments that we could possibly do. I think we could do with learning some new vocal exercises because at times it does tend to get boring as were doing the same exercises all over again. My one example would Be to say ( Benedict Cumberbatch) as fast as you can without stuttering or messing up his name.
3. How would you describe the voice of your character? How did you approach the voice of the character? Can you give 3 specific examples of what you did? Did your voice of the character match other portrayals and if so in what way?
To be quite frank I did struggle with the voice of my character a lot as my natural voice would sometimes peep through. The reason I try to avoid this is that I tend to have quite q natural posh voice at times and because my character was a pirate it would not fit and make her stand out of all the other pirates due to the voice. The approach I had to take to her voice was by watching films with pirates in them (Pirates of the Caribbean and Hook) and I would study their voices and practice them at home to try and portray my character's voice but once again I would still struggle with my voice but I managed in a way to try and keep in tone with the other characters that were in the pantomime. Which I did ok, I think.
4. How would you describe the movement of your character? How did you approach the movement of the character? Can you give 3 specific examples of what you did? Did your movement of the character match other portrayals and if so in what way?
My characters movement was quite fluid at times but it could also be quietly rushed and not consistent at times. I approached my characters movement by Doing extensive research about how a pirate would move in that period that my character lived in. This was a quite difficult task as there are many different interpretations of pirates and the way they would move but I managed to get their movements even though at times once again I would drop it.
5. At what point were you happy with sharing your piece in public performance? What was it that gave you the confidence to do this? Similarly, what aspects of your performance made you less confident about the performance? Can you explain why this was the case? Would you have done things differently?
I think I became more happy to share my performance the week before the actual performance as I felt ready as I knew all my lines, stage directions and dances. The one thing that gave me the confidence to do this was the fact I knew we have great teachers who will help guide us into doing the performance in the right way and the fact that we all pulled together, in the end, made me more confident. The dancing parts of the pantomime I think made me feel less confident in the performance I face as I messed up the dances quiet a lot. Which made me feel awkward as I stood out from everybody else who was found correctly. To fix this problem I think that I should have practiced about more with the dances and asked for help when I needed it because I did.
6. How do you think audiences responded to your character? Were they able to relate them? Can you give reasons to support this? How did you make your character relevant to a children’s audience? Give 3 specific strategies that you used.
I think audiences responded to my character quite well considering for the mere fact that my character was a pirate. I got ”Booed” (as necessary) but even that meant that audience beloved who we were portraying and acted accordingly. I don't think the cast was able to relate to my character (a pirate) as I was just really a pirate and not my children in my drastic opinionated mind the audience would not be able to relate to her because of (also) the different time periods we are in. By making it a very child-friendly character while still showing her emotions that I had to portray. This, as I might say, was a very difficult task as well because due to the infringements that the form of ”children's theatre” takes on it gets difficult in terms not to act a certain way to affect the children view on certain topics or scare them in any way.
7. Overall, what went well? Was there anything that did not go to plan? What would you do differently if you were to perform this production again? Personally, what were your strengths and weaknesses in performance? What do you need to work on to improve in the future and how are you going to do this? (Be very specific in terms of acting, vocal and movement techniques – i.e. focus, projection, tone, etc.)
I think the whole performance went really well and when my errors are removed the whole performance is in my appearance truly amazing for our first one. Set changes didn't go to plan at times and some issues like missed lines did cause a ruckus with other cast members but as the audience members sing notice the issue I didn't think it was really a problem. I would add in a few more character lines for lesser heard/ seen characters and I would add in a few more songs and dances to get the audience more involved. My strengths and weaknesses for the whole performances were one too many (for the weaknesses side). The strengths were the deliverance of lines whereas the weaknesses were to do with dances and stage directions which were one too many. I need to work on my stage directions a lot more and dances we learn in the future as I struggled greatly to learn the steps/ movements of both dances. The stage directions are just to the point where I need to learn where certain exits are and come on for scenes.

- Next the Medieval times from about (500 to 1300 CE)
- Renaissance from about (1300 to 1700 CE)
- Neo Classicism during and following the renaissance.

14/01/19 Drama Practitioners
Konstantin Stanislavski
- He is the most famous and well known Theatrical Practitioner.
- A Theatre Practitioner is someone who creates theatrical performances and/ or writes theatrical ideas and teachings.
- He formed the Moscow Art theatre and is most commonly known for his "System".
- The "System" was Stanislavski's acting method, born out of a quest for Realism in acting. The Principal objective of the "System" was to aid the actor in creating an illusion of actuality on stage and in convincing the audience that he (the actor) was portraying a real person, convincing his audience that he was a different person.
- The "System" teaches you how to act on stage but how you use your own personal feelings and emotions to portray other characters and their purpose.
- Two techniques in the "System" (Internal and External). Establishing Life (Internal) and transferring it to Physical Form (External). Also included is Textual Analysis.
Lee Strasberg
- He was a Polish Born Actor (1901-1982)
- Method Acting Developed from The Stanislavski System.
- His technique was what Actors strived for, a realistic performance by utilizing their "Emotional Memories".
- His Method goes beyond "Emotional Memory" and uses a technique called "Substitution" to temporarily become the character they are playing.
- It's all about truth and reaction using Unique and Original Behaviour.
- Method Acting dictates that Actors should prepare for a role by immersing themselves as much as possible in the circumstances of their characters. This can cause terrible side effects. Certain Actors this has happened to are: Daniel Day-Lewis, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, and Eddie Redmayne.
Bertolt Brecht
- He was a German Born Poet, Playwright and Theatre Director (1898-1956).
- His most famous plays include "Life of Galileo", "Mother Courage", "Her Children" and "The Caucasian Chalk Circle".
- Brecht's work was very popular in the '50s, '60s, and '70s but he is less fashionable today.
- Brecht was a Marxist and made his theatre highly political. He wanted his theatre to spark an interest in his audience's’ perception of the world.
- His work was often mischievous, provocative and ironic.
- He invented a range of theatrical devices known as epic theatre.
- He felt the actors should "demonstrate" rather than become a "role". He saw them as storytellers who could play many parts and have a view of the characters they were playing.
- Epic Theatre is a type of Political Theatre that addresses contemporary issues.
- The Verfremdungseffekt (The Alienation Effect) was developed by Brecht in the 1920s and '30s and was a form of "Escapism" and did not challenge the audience at all.
- The Techniques that Brecht used where as follows: Breaking the Fourth wall, Montage, Use of song music or dance, Narration, Minimal set, Costumes, Props, Lighting, Coming out of character, Use of Placards, Freeze Frames/ Tableauxs and Gestus.
Steve Berkoff
- He was Born in Steney, London in 1937 and is still an energized Actor, Playwright, and Director.
- He trained as an Actor at the Webber Douglas Academy in London and Studied Movement at the Ecole Internationale de Théâtre de Jaques Lecoq in Paris ( The Jaques Lecoq International school of Theatre in Paris)
- He worked as a Mime and Physical theatre at Webber Douglas and First experimented with "The Trial" Using an Ensemble of Students.
- He entered a series of repertory companies and in 1968 formed the London Theatre Group.
- His plays and adaptations have been performed in many countries and in many languages. Among the many adaptations, Berkoff has created for the stage, directed and toured, are Kafka's Metamorphosis and The Trial, Agamemnon after Aeschylus, and Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher.
- Berkoff's original stage plays include East, West, Messiah: Scenes from a Crucifixion, The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, Decadence, Harry's Christmas, Massage, Acapulco and Brighton Beach Scumbags. He has performed his trilogy of solo shows, One Man, Shakespeare's Villains and Requiem for Ground Zero, in venues all over the world.
Antonin Artaud
- Antonin Artaud (1896 - 1948) was a French Playwright, Poet, Actor, and Director.
- He suffered from Mental Illness and Drug Addiction throughout his life.
- He was not realized as an Influential Practitioner during his own lifetime.
- His most famous theory is the "Theater of Cruelty".
- The Theatre of Cruelty, developed by Antonin Artaud, aimed to shock audiences through gesture, image, sound, and lighting.
- The Theatre of Cruelty is both a philosophy and a discipline. Artaud wanted to disrupt the relationship between audience and performer.
14/01/19 Unit 17.2: "The Voice Coach"
For this assignment, we had to create presentations (which had to last 16 minutes). These presentations were going to be presented in front of a combination of Level 2 and Level 3 students. These presentations had to include exercises to help teach the other students on techniques on how to improve there vocal ability/ range.
Trishauna's Vocal Development Workshop
In Trishauna's Vocal Development session, she chose to focus on Articulation. She started the session with the warm up 1,1,2,1. In this exercise, she increased to 8 and went back down to 1; while saying it in a group and by ourselves. Next, we did Tongue Twisters (Wood Chuck Chuck) and if we couldn't say it fast enough she would help us by breaking it down till we were able to say it fast enough. Then once again we would say the tongue twister all together but also by ourselves as to also help with our confidence. The last exercise we did was something that I had come up with (as she had asked us if there were any other exercises she wanted us to do). It was like a Tongue twister using someone's name (for example Benedict Cumberbatch) and they would have to say the name really face as it will help you pronounce words and letters correctly. We had all chosen Sian's name to do this exercise with as her name is really hard to pronounce. Overall this Session was really interesting and interactive as it contains exercises I still use today to help me with my articulation. She was a very good teacher and very helpful when we needed it in certain areas. She was also very attentive with her PowerPoint and she explained certain exercises to the fullest meaning that you got what the task was about and how to properly do said task.
Nilson's Vocal Development Workshop
In Nilson's Vocal Development Session he chose to once again focus on Articulation. In this exercise, he used a piano as he accompanies. He first started with the warm-up of 1,1,2,1 which once again we went from ascending to descending order which we then repeated as there was some mishaps were present (Numbers are forgotten or put in the wrong order). The next and last exercise we did was a tongue twister, "My Mother Mashed My M and M's on a Monday Morning oh ah". This exercise was a really fun exercise to do as we all started to laugh as the pitch got higher. Overall the Session was really enjoyable and the exercises were very fun to do. My Only downfall with this session is that we did not have as many exercises to do then the session before, But overall it was a very enjoyable experience.
Abigail's Vocal Development Workshop
In Abigail's Session, we learned about Projections, Articulation, and Pitch. For Projection, we did an "AH" scale where we made certain sounds at a volume that you were comfortable with and then proceed to get harder until you reach your limit. For Articulation we once again did tongue twisters "Peter Piper Picked A Peck of Pickled Peppers" and repeated that till we could pronounce it fast even though once again it was a struggle. The last exercise we did was Pitch sweeps that help us improve our Pitch. Overall she explained every form of the exercises into Depth and helped us improve in certain areas we said we found difficult. The exercises she had done was very enjoyable to participate in.

DRAMATIC ACTION
Thursday the 28th of March 2019
I have received my new script today for a production called "Girls like that". After receiving the script everyone of us sat in a circle and began to go through a table read of the script; everyone taking turns so that we got a feel of the script and how the charters would sound. As the lesson approached its end we had only read through the first two scenes of the script and that we would be able to finish reading the script off on Friday.
Friday the 29th of March 2019
I did not attend the lesson on this date as I was off ill so I had to attempt to catch up by asking other members of the cast what they did in that lesson. Even though it was finishing reading through the script I could have missed more important notes made on the day due to my absence. I managed to catch up during the weekend and we could then begin the next step of the development of our production.
4th of March - 26th of March 2019
During this period of time, we were given our own scenes to edit and we also allocated certain lines to other cast members and stage directions to certain scenes. We were also able to remove lines to make our production make more scene with the limited amount of people we had. Once again there where times during these passing weeks where I did not attend either college or class and had to catch up on areas that I had missed out again which would be adding everyone's annotations into our own scripts so that we have a much clearer idea of what we have to do.
Thursday the 27th of March 2019
I did not attend the lesson and had missed some essential choreography from the beginning of the production. But I have learned the beginning bit of the dance, I have just go to learn the rest of the dance in the correct order. Also, the first bell sounds that transition onto the dance Music "Run the world girls" By Beyonce. This now helps us time the dance properly so that we can enter and leave correctly (The Scene).
Friday the 29th of March 2019
Today we started our practice during our lunch break at 12:45pm. During this practice, I was able to learn the dance a lot better as I had other cast members to help me figure out other areas of the dance. Also in this lesson, we changed other issues with this dance, that did not work with the timing of the dance. During our lesson, we once again practiced the choreography to make sure we get it right. In this session, we also went through set changes to certain scenes and how they would be set out and how we could make it work during set changes and what props we would use to set the scene. The last thing we did today went through Scenes 2-4 Using expression and adding in certain areas of dialogue were needed to help fill the scene.
Monday the 1st of April 2019
Today we practiced the dance for the opening number of "Girls like that", which is "Run the World Girls" By Beyonce. During the time spent rehearsing the dance today, we all realized that there were some major faults with our dance routine that needed to be fixed as our dance looked all over the place otherwise. So the changes that were made were towards the end of the dance instead of us doing different stuff we all joined in to take a group photograph to symbolize the togetherness of our groups. While this is going on someone shall push Sian out of the frame to get the idea of her being alone and isolated. The last thing that was changed in this dance was timings as some of the timings did not accurately represent the song correctly so that was also changed.
Tuesday the 2nd of April 2019 - Monday the 22nd of April 2019
Due to my catching of the Flu, I was off during the last week of term. But over the half term period, I had time to develop my character a bit more and learn the script. Now to be quite honest I did not learn the whole script I only learned scenes 1 through to 4 because they are the only scenes we had started to go through and develop in class. We did not do any rehearsals over the half term as other members were busy and we couldn't start new scenes without them.
Wednesday the 24th of April 2019
Today we practiced Scene 2 in preparation for Friday's dress rehearsal. In Friday's dress rehearsal we perform one scene from our play to the other group to then get feedback on how to improve our work. So during our rehearsal run, we had quite a few mistakes as there was no emotion being shown during the scene, lines where being forgotten and ques were being missed. In the end, we just decided to go through the dance again but even then the dance messed up as no one had learned the dance. And the ones that did had to practice it during the rest of the time we had left of the lesson. I also learned how me, Frankie and Safeel are going to leave the stage so that it does not look odd.Thursday the 25th of April 2019
Today I had turned up late for lesson But I still managed to get a little bit of the rehearsal down with what little time I had left in that lesson. Scene 3 had some slight changes to it, meaning that instead of us saying full lines we would break them up by saying he said or she said and Kate, Shante or Safia saying the main line while standing up as if they were acting out and we were the spectators.
Friday the 26th of April 2019
The beginning of the lesson consisted of us all going through the dance in Scene 1 (Plus Sian's monologue towards the end of scene 1) and then through Scene 2, as these were the only Scene's we going to perform in front of the other group ready for there feedback. The notes we received from Rebbeca and the other group are as goes:
- Noise cues need to be more precise and snappy as to make the scene flow a bit more rapid.
- Work on speech cues as they were all out of sync as well.
- The dance at the beginning of the scene needs to be improved upon much more as once again moves were forgotten and timing was wrong.
- While performing scenes more emotions need to be shown as the scenes start to look blander.
- Work on The flow of our lines as once again it begins to sound out of sync as lines are either forgotten or missed.
- Projection is a key just as it does not have the same effect when said quietly.
Thursday the 2nd of May 2019
I did not keep a note of rehearsals that we had done from the 26th of April to the 2nd of May. In this lesson, we had gone through the party scene and the fight scene as we had not choreographed it properly and it looked off. We also decided what clothing we would wear to portray the schoolgirls but also the separate characters. Not only that but we decided to cut out some scenes as the production ended up being too long. (The scenes we cut were 9, 5 and 13). We also went through the Mcdonalds scene as we had not practiced it as much.
Friday the 3rd of May 2019
Today we did a full dress rehearsal of "Girls like that". We still had not worked out the ending scene or cue times but we were hoping to work on that during the last week of rehearsals. We did struggle a little bit during the full dress rehearsal as many of us including me hadn't learned the whole entire script, so there were some moments where we struggled to go through the scenes but in the end, we managed to go through the whole entire production and that was something we had never completed so it was a major goal for us.Monday the 6th of May 2019
In today's lesson, we discussed more timings and how we were going to be able to change in time for the next scenes (for example the party scene). Also, we discussed future rehearsal times in preparation for Wednesday's lesson. I think the main issue we still had was costume and timings as we still had not quite figured out the technique for a quick costume change in time for the next scene and if we could not master that some scenes would start before we were even done getting dressed.
Wednesday the 8th of May 2019 (The Day Of The Performance)
Today was the day of our performance and I was not able to turn up as I was stuck at a test center. I let my whole cast down including myself as I left them not knowing where I was and having to find a replacement for my character short notice, which in turn ruined the performance due to my no show. I hope that my group is able to re-perform this piece in the future so that I can prove to Rebecca and Helen that I am committed, I just do stupid things sometimes and don't own up to it even when I know I'm in the wrong.

Friday the 29th of March 2019
I do not have any notes from any lessons prior to today as I did not attend any of them so I shall be starting from today with my notes. In today's lesson, I and Ella wrote up a plan for our scene (although not completely finished) it is in the works. I am also yet to write up my beginning scene monologue but I shall start writing it up as soon as possible. Today though I wrote up a plan of me and Ella's scene.
- The scene begins at our house.
- Blackout lifts to Mine and Ella's character hot in an argument about me forcing her character to come out to her parents.
- Ella's Parents call her phone, interrupting our argument and annoying my character further.
- Voice over would be used for the call, needs to be timed correctly in time to the actual dialogue. (Parents dialogue).
- Parents begin to ramble on about there day to Ella's character before jumping on to the issue they have against the gay couple they had seen today (as they are against LGBT).
- Ella has an argument with parents about this issue.
- Ella hangs up the phone on her parents.
- The argument between both me and Ella's character resumes.
- Scene Ends on are you Ashamed of me?
- Ella's character stutters to answer my question.
- So my character tells her to forget about it.
- And the scene then ends.
Tuesday the 2nd of April 2019
In today's lesson, we spoke about the order in which the devised piece should go in as we (as a group) had not yet fully decided on an order we wanted to do it in yet. During the beginning scene, I am displaying aggression towards Ella's character over the fact that she still has not come out to her parents yet. Instead of doing the Monologues right at the beginning of the scene (Scene 1), They have been moved around to various other parts of the actual piece as to help make more sense of the actual production itself. Before the actual monologues were moved there was an idea to do a dramatical technique towards the monologues by going into " The Triangle". There also needed to be a better explanation of what each of us is there for (Therapy Session). Scene 2 is Meant to be the scene of linkage, by this I mean this is how the audience find out that we are all connected to each other in one way or another via our life experiences and storylines (In this instance we are all neighbors). Scene 1 ends up with all of us at Shante's therapy session but shouting at each other and completely ignoring Shante until she tells us all to stop as it begins to get all too much for her. The First Line that I shout out to Ella in Scene 1 is "It's not that hard to tell people!".
Tuesday the 23rd of April 2019
In this lesson, we once again talked about the placing of the scenes as we still had not got that properly worked out. In this lesson, we mainly spoke about Me and Ella's Scene and how we should begin to act it out, This part was quite tricky as the original character place Me and Ella had in our scene didn't work out quite as well as we planned so we switched it around and after we had done that the scene started to run a lot smoother. We also did a lot of group participation, where members of our group would come up on stage and help us work out how our scene would look by pretending to be one of our characters which also helped us begin to perfect our scene a lot more. The only thing left to do in this particular scene is to write up stage directions and a mini script so that we know what we are going to say. The last thing we did in this lesson was that we started to go through Trishauna's Scene but never quite fully managed to go through it all as we ran out of time.
Friday the 26th of April 2019
In today's lesson, we started to brainstorm ideas for how we can start Trishaunah's and Sian's storyline and how they're scenes would be played out, Via props and sound and lighting cues. We also came up with a Voiceover narration for Sian while she does her scene (Using voicemail recordings). Trishhauna also began to narrate her own storyline while the rest of us played other characters in other members scenes or just simply worked on our own scenes. The last two things we did was work on the storyline and improving our scenes including the phone call and Ella's character coming out but we also worked on shades of lighting and sounds we could use to help demonstrate where we are at any time of the production but to also make it interesting for the people watching it in general.
Monday the 29th of April 2019
Did not attend the lesson today as I was off ill.
Tuesday the 30th of April 2019
Today we had to do a progress report (Via camcorder) to see how ch progress we had made since the first time she had filmed us during rehearsals. We were then given constructive feedback from Helen on what we need to improve on to make our piece much better and perform the scenes to there fullest:
- Voicemails need to be said to the audience (Individually, Ella, Shante, and Abigail)
- Trish needs to think of things to say things that are less generic.
- Find proper Violin Music to go into Sian's scene.
- Needs to be more energetic and not Bland and boring.
- There needs to be more emotion in each character.
Wednesday the 1st of May 2019
In today's session, I began to write up the tech sheet in more detail as it was not nearly as detailed enough for Dan to do the lighting and sound properly. We also began to talk about set cues that would go in time with the lighting and sound. Also, we had a scene change to Mine and Ella's Scene to help try and build it up more. This is how the scene would be set out:
- Before Ella's monologue, she would start getting emotional and cry on the floor and then either Sian or Trish could come out and start saying some mean insults about her homosexuality, then another one of either Trish or Sian could come out and say something Ella's "Parent's" would say and then I could start having a go at Ella for not wanting to come out and then we would all get louder and louder and then Blackout. And then into the next part of our storyline.
Wednesday the 8th of May 2019
Due to "Girls like that" and "Pronoun" taking center stage, because it was a much bigger group piece we hadn't really rehearsed for our devised piece but we plan on doing regular rehearsals starting from today. On our group chat, we spoke about Lighting and sound cues once more as I had not yet completed that as I had not been given all of the information. We also had a scene theme change in Trish's scene and that was that she was going to be "Sexually Harassed".
Monday the 13th of May 2019
I cannot exactly remember if we had rehearsals prior to this day but in today's lesson, we went through Tech and lighting with Dan and sounds that we were going to need to be played. We also went through me and Ella's finalized neighbors scene's and they came out very nicely which was a pleasant surprise. We also went through Trish's neighbor Scene and Sian's (Which we later scrapped). We also ran through Trish's main scene with her which was great as all our ideas collected together created a really good scene in my opinion. We also began to do all the recordings that we needed for our performance.
Wednesday the 15th of May 2019 (Was the Due date of our Performance)
We did not really rehearse yesterday due to some incidents that had occurred yesterday. Due to all of us having incomplete pieces and us not having done tech runs we were not able to do the performance on Wednesday night. Instead, it has been moved to Wednesday the 22nd of May 2019 which gives us a bit more time to prepare. In our lesson, we worked on changing Trish's school scene as it looked a bit to GCSE and did not really elaborate on what we truly needed. Also, we worked on Trish's beginning of her main Scene and that came out perfect.
Friday the 17th of May 2019
We did not do any rehearsals today but we did talk about adding a song to add to the end of the devised piece which I do strongly disagree with as we won't have enough time for it but we can always experiment and see what we can do to improve our piece to where it needs to be.
Monday the 20th of May 2019
In today's session, we ran through Scene 1, we had changed parts that went wrong or didn't make any sense and went through Scene 2 and part of Scene 3 as we weren't able to do Trish's part during the afternoon as she had to go home early. During the afternoon session, we went through Shante and Sian's Scene quite a lot as we had not been through it a lot. During their scene, I play a male who cheated on Sian. We also worked on me and Ella's scene which went really well as me and Ella booth portrayed our characters with such intensity that it made our characters personalities stand out exceptionally.
10/05/2019 The Trial
Information about the play:
The Trial (original German title: Der Process, later Der Proceß, Der Prozeß and Der Prozess) is a novel written by Franz Kafka between 1914 and 1915 and published posthumously in 1925. One of his most well-known works, it tells the story of Josef K., a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime revealed neither to him nor to the reader. Heavily influenced by Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Kafka even went so far as to call Dostoyevsky a blood relative. Like Kafka's other novels, The Trial was never completed, although it does include a chapter which brings the story to an end.
After Kafka's death in 1924 his friend and literary executor Max Brod edited the text for publication by Verlag Die Schmiede. The original manuscript is held at the Museum of Modern Literature, Marbach am Neckar, Germany. The first English language translation, by Willa and Edwin Muir, was published in 1937. In 1999, the book was listed in Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century and as No. 2 of the Best German Novels of the Twentieth Century.
Friday the 10th of May 2019
Today we received our scripts for a short play called "The Trial" which we will be performing on the 24th of May. We were split into scenes which we would have to learn. I am in scene 2 and I play the role of "Chorus 1" which is the conscience of "Joseph K". In the lesson today we began to go through our scenes and try to make sense of what the significance of our characters was and what they are meant to do throughout the scene.

In today's lesson, we once again continued to work through our script and try to remember our lines while Rebecca worked on Scene 1. We ran through this scene a couple of times and each time we tried to change our expressions or the way our voices sounded to help match the tone of the scene and what the scene is trying to portray.

I arrived quite late to this lesson, so I had to catch up on things that had been done in the lesson but in this lesson, we had to do the choreographed positionings in scene 2 (My scene). We begin by standing at the edge of the stage and just as scene 1 ends we walk on but we make sure to avoid each other by turning different ways. Then once Zainab has said her line we all stand still ready for my line. The Next change in the movement would have to be when the bell rings we all two-step to the side so that we are facing the 2 guards and Joseph K. After that we would (the choruses) picot to the front say our line then turn back round. The next call for action is when the guards begin to search Joseph K's belongings, during this we all picot to the front and stay that way till the final movement where we once again pivot towards Joseph K then face back to the front.

In today's lesson we ran through the scene with scene 1 as they had already been blocked. The scenes transitioned very nicely into each other almost as if it were balletic. Lines where still a trouble to learn; especially the chorus lines as we have not fully rehearsed them but we should somewhat improve as the days go on.
Wednesday the 22nd of May 2019 - Thursday the 23rd of May 2019
Once again due to the fact we also had our devised pieces to perform we did sessions where we blocked all our scenes and rehearsed them from Scene 1 - Scene 3. Both Scene's 1 and 3 rehearsed in the theater whereas my Scene (Scene 2) had to rehearse in the Dance studio. During the rehearsal we all did not put an idea towards rehearsing Scene 2 and instead mucked around, talked and did nothing and i think in my personal opinion is down to the fact that we had two other performances pending and we were scared as a class to fail them too as well. During the rehearsal on the 23rd of May, we did a full run through from Scene's 1-3 and we began working on the transition from Scene 3 to Scene 2 and proceeded to block Scene 3 completely.
Feedback for Scene 2:
- Lines weren't properly learnt
- Chorus was not properly learned by us all.
- Projection was really good from some of us.
- Seperate lines were learnt really well.
- Movements were not on point.
- Speed was not quick enough meaning that parts of our scene just dragged on.
- More thought was needed to help influence our lines.
- Projection from some of our cast needs improving.
